Questions — drawing AL-GK-02
Go-Kart Project · AurinkoLab · steering column bracket
Open the drawing next to this page and work through the questions in order. Write your answers on paper and bring them to the session.
Nobody expects all fifteen. Get as far as you get, then stop — where you stop tells us where to start with you, and that is the whole point.

Part 1 · Reading the drawing
Everything you need is printed somewhere on the sheet. Look around the edges too.
- What are the overall length and height of the part?
- How many holes have to be drilled, and what is the diameter of each one?
- What material is the bracket made from, and how thick is it?
- How many of these brackets have to be made?
Part 2 · Working it out
These are not printed anywhere. You have to think a little.
- What is dimension X?
The numbers along the bottom edge have to add up.
- What is the narrow rectangle on the right-hand side of the sheet, and what does it tell you?
- What do the long dash-dot lines mean, the ones running through the holes?
- The scale is 1:2. Is the real bracket bigger or smaller than the picture, and by how much?
Part 3 · Thinking like an engineer
Harder. There is no shame in writing "I don't know" — but have a guess first.
- Why is there a slot in the plate instead of another round hole?
- The bolts are M10, which means 10 mm across. So why are the holes 10.5 mm and not exactly 10?
- One dimension is missing from this drawing. Without it, the part cannot be made. Which one is it?
Go feature by feature and ask: could I mark this out on the steel with what I have been given?
- Describe, step by step, how you would drill the two ∅10,5 holes.
Part 4 · Do these with your hands
Bring the results to the session — on paper, or hold them up to the camera.
- Measure 35 mm with a ruler and mark it on a sheet of paper.
- Sketch the side view by hand, freehand is fine, and write its two dimensions on it.
- Imagine you have drilled a hole in the wrong place. What do you do next?
Check yourself
Take four of your answers and add the numbers together:
overall length + overall height + plate thickness + dimension X
= 380
If you get 380, all four are right. If you get anything else, at least one of them is wrong — go back and find which. This is the only answer we are giving away.
